The volume is Oceana, or, England and her colonies by James Anthony Froude (London; Longmans, 1886). It is accompanied by a typescript page, dictated by Christopher Wilson, explaining the reason for the 3 poems by Sir Henry Francis Wilson inserted in the book in 1886, together with three photographs. The photograph on the verso of the title page is of Sir Henry Francis Wilson and the smaller one opposite is of Edward Samuel Holme Wilson.

Distinguished historian James Anthony Froude was born at Dartington rectory, Devon, in 1818. He was the brother of William Froude (1810-1879), engineer and naval architect, and of Richard Hurrell Froude (1803-1836), divine. The younger Froude was educated at Westminster School from 1830, and then privately in the village of Merton.
